We desperately wanted to stay on a vineyard where someone could speak English and explain the process to us. So we headed for a place but too far which had had really good reviews.
First though, we stopped in a little place called Sauveterre-de-Guyenne to empty our water and have a look around the village. Even though it was mid morning, only one coffee shop, a newsagents and a bread shop were open, and only a hand full of people about.
We then had breakfast and made our way to Haut Pradot vineyard. There wasn’t anyone there when we arrived, but they were lots of signs directing Motorhomes to the parking area.
After all the great reviews and wanting so much to have an “English” tour, time was getting on, and we still didn’t see anyone. We about to accept that it just wasn’t going to happen, when the owner came walking down towards us. He asked if everything was alright, that we could use their table and chairs, and their BBQ, and to also help ourselves to the cherries on his tree !
We asked about a tour and he offered us to go with him there and then. Although he said only spoke a little English, he did exceptionally well. The vineyard had been in his family for 3 generations since 1817. He was very proud of his business and provided a great explanation of the history and process.
He then invited us to taste the wines; 1 white, 1 rose and 2 reds - the same wine but different years. We also had a taste of the 3 different marmalades that his Grandma had produced, by adding sugar to the wine. It was all lovely.
We brought some wine and marmalade and received a small bottle of wine and a jar of salt made from the wine as free gifts. We enjoyed the wine with our BBQ as we admired the beautiful view.
