We saw that Asti wasn’t too far away, and so we agreed to make that out next stop. The Italian roads are so worn, much worse than back home. The contents of the Motorhome rattled so much as we travelled along them, I’m surprised nothing got broken !
We had a look around Asti, and had to stop for Asti Strawberry, Asti Peach and tapas - absolutely delicious 😋
We then made our way to a stopover on a farm just up the road. There was an English Motorhome already there, and we were excited anticipating an English conversation with them when they returned from their bike ride. However, they were obviously not as excited as us to see an English van. They didn’t want to talk, packed their van and left ☹️
Never mind, there was a German van the other side of us, and when they returned from their bike ride, they were more than happy to speak to us in English 😊. They were a lovely couple and were making their way to meet some other friends for a week’s hike.
We had read that the owners of this stopover made lovely food for guests, all freshly prepared with food their had grown. We were just getting ready to go to the restaurant, when the storm that had been threatening to come, finally arrived. It was so interesting watching the sky change so quickly. We had thunder, lightening and heavy rain. I had to get my waterproof coat out just to go around the corner. The storm only lasted about 20 minutes, and then the sun came back out.
The German couple were also eating with us this evening, and we had quite a laugh with some of the translations with the Italian owner. As he brought out each dish, he explained what it was, and when Chris asked if he was a chef, he replied that no “it was his woman” 😂
The food was absolutely delicious, the Italians really know how to cook and mix the various accompaniments to produce such tasty food. We were treated to tomatoes topped with garlic, anchovies and oil, deep fried breads, omelettes with homemade tomatoe sauce, and a plate of meats and cheeses with green tomatoes and figs dip. Then we had vegetables and an oil and garlic hot dip. Then came the tagliatelle cooked in egg and oils, chicken with pickled onions and raison sauce, and dessert consisted of poached peaches, chocolate and amaretto. I could hardly move after all of that !
We chose red wine to go with the meal, followed by italian coffee, and then Chris had a pure alcoholic shot afterwards, whilst I went for the strawberry version.
